Canada to join diplomatic boycott of Olympic Games in China

Government of Canada to join diplomatic boycott of Beijing Olympics, athletes will be able to take part in the competition, declared during a press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“Over the past few months, we have discussed the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games with our partners and allies around the world. Like many other countries, we are concerned about repeated human rights violations by the Chinese government, so we are announcing that we will not send any diplomatic missions to the Beijing Games, ”Trudeau said.

He added that Canadian athletes have been preparing for the Games for a long time and can count on the support of the government.

Thus, Canada joined the diplomatic boycott of the Games previously announced by the American and Australian authorities.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, speaking in the British Parliament House of Commons on December 8, also said members of the government would not visit the capital of the PRC, i.e. “there will in fact be a diplomatic boycott.”

On December 8, European Parliament Vice-President Nicola Bier also called on the European Union to completely boycott the Beijing Olympics.

The Olympic Games will be held in the Chinese capital from February 4 to 20, 2022.
