The controversial Keystone XL pipeline project between Canada and the United States has been abandoned, announced on Wednesday (9) the Canadian operator TC Energy, nearly five months after the decision of the American president, Joe Biden, to block the ‘initiative.

“TC Energy confirmed today, after a thorough review of its options and in consultation with a partner, the Government of Alberta, that it has terminated the Keystone XL pipeline project,” the company said in a statement. communicated.

The Canadian group had announced the suspension of work hours before Biden signed the decree on January 20 when he took office.

The Calgary-based group in western Canada lamented the US decision and announced “the layoff of thousands of workers.”

This project, supported by the Canadian government but criticized by environmentalists, was launched in 2008. It was first canceled by Barack Obama because it was considered too polluting, but President Donald Trump rejected it for economic reasons.

The repeal of that Trump decree was a campaign promise by Biden, as part of his plan to fight climate change.

The project aimed to transport more than 800,000 barrels of oil per day from 2023 between the Canadian province of Alberta and refineries in the Gulf of Mexico.
