The President of the Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, advised Ukraine, when building its relations with NATO, to follow the example of Finland, which is part of the European Union (EU), but is not a member of the alliance. He expressed this opinion in an interview with Handelsblatt.
The German diplomat said Russia has long feared that the United States intends to integrate Ukraine into NATO. However, Ischinger stressed, “this is a red line for Russia.”
At the same time, Ischinger noted that it is now impossible to say for sure that Ukraine will never join NATO. He stressed that he did not yet believe in the so-called “next Russian invasion of Ukraine, which some fear”. The diplomat believes that the new German government should promote the development of a dialogue, on the one hand, between the European Union and NATO, and on the other hand, with Moscow.
Previously, Ukrainian Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov called on the British, American and Canadian military to protect the integrity of the state in the event of Russian aggression. The minister also called on the “Anglo-Saxon allies” to provide assistance to Ukraine without going through NATO, as well as by sending more military instructors to the country.
