WASHINGTON, November 16 – RIA Novosti. Canada has imposed sanctions on 11 Nicaraguan officials for human rights violations, the Canadian Foreign Ministry said. Canadian citizens cannot carry out any financial transactions with them. This is the third package of sanctions against senior Nicaraguan officials. Previously, the Canadian authorities had put on the sanctions list more than 20 people associated with the president of the country Daniel Ortega, including his daughter Camila Ortega, vice-president and at the same time first lady of Nicaragua Rosario Maria Murillo de Ortega, head of government Central Bank Leonardo Ramirez, Minister of Finance Ivan Adolfo Acosta Montalvana: Similar sanctions had already been imposed by the United Kingdom and the United States. In the presidential elections of November 7, the ruling Sandinista Popular Liberation Front, with presidential and vice-presidential candidates Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, obtained 75.87% of the vote, with a turnout of 65.26% . The winners will be inaugurated on January 10 for a five-year term. The period 2022-2026 will be the fourth consecutive presidential term and the fifth in the political career of Daniel Ortega – he has already won the elections of 1984, 2006, 2011 and 2016. The wife of the president, Rosario Murillo, who is the vice -President of Nicaragua, will take office for the second time. Since the beginning of June, dozens of politicians and opposition activists have been detained in Nicaragua on various charges. The Spanish government condemned the opposition’s absence from the elections, the imprisonment of its leaders, the absence of international observers and independent media, and the persecution of journalists.
