In the 2021 Ice Hockey World Cup final in Riga, the Canadian national team beat Finland 3-2 in overtime in a fierce match. Canada, on Sunday June 6, became the world champion for the 27th time. She received seven of these titles in the 21st century.
In the ninth minute of the first period, Finnish striker Mikael Ruohomaa scored the goal. In the fifth minute of the second period, the Canadiens tied the game thanks to Max Comtois. Four minutes before the end of the period, Canadian national team captain Adam Henrik sent the puck into the Finnish team’s goal, but the goal was not awarded. In the third period – already in the sixth minute – Petteri Lindbom increased the score to 2-1 in favor of Finland. But five minutes later, the Canadians – thanks to Henrik – gained the upper hand. In overtime, the winner was Nick Paul (3: 2).

The Canadians lost the first three games of the tournament’s preliminary phase, notably against the national teams of Latvia and Germany, and only left the group after fourth place.
At the end of the game, the Canadian national team overtook the USSR (22) and Russia (five) in terms of world hockey titles.
In the 2019 World Cup final, the Finns won 3: 1 over the Canadians.
