Donald Trump launches social media platform, Canadians may be living “the American dream” and fake vaccination cards are circulating on social media.

It’s all the tech news that’s all the rage right now, welcome to Hashtag Trending! It is Friday October 22nd and I am your host, Samira Balsara.

Former US President Donald Trump today announced in a press release that he will be launching his own social media platform dubbed TRUTH social. As detailed in an article by BBC News, Trump says the platform “would stand up to the tyranny of big tech,” which Trump has not lacked in clashes with over the past year. Trump was notoriously banned from multiple social media platforms in January following the events of January 6, and had hinted at creating his own platform for an extended period after his ban. In the same press release, Trump also announced that his group, Trump Media and Technology Group, intended to create a video-on-demand service that would feature “non-awakened” programming, as stated in the release.

According to an article by The Globe and Mail, Canadians may be living the “American dream” promised by our neighbors to the south, as economic and environmental policy continues to be a priority north of the border. The article cites Canada’s lower poverty rate, as well as openness to immigration, as reasons why Canada is the much more viable and intriguing option for those looking for opportunities. The Globe and Mail also cites Canada’s efforts to diversify its economy, especially in the technology and innovation sectors, with people from all over the world, including India, Europe’s l ‘East and even the United States, immigrating to Canada.

Facebook, Instagram and Telegram are go-to sites for finding illegal vaccine cards, Digital Citizens Alliance and CSW Investigation Finds of Technology

Finally, according to a study by the Coalition for a Safer Web (CSW), bad actors are turning to Facebook, Instagram and Telegram to buy fake vaccination cards. According to the study, hundreds of messages were found advertising the fake cards, with “lot and store numbers which sellers say have a better chance of deceiving authorities,” according to an article by PRNewswire.com. What is perhaps even more disturbing is that after these fake cards were reported on their respective websites, the messages would have remained online for several weeks after their existence was reported. CSW’s report follows several other reports dating back to last March that found fake vaccines, questionable quality masks and illicit trade in COVID-19 all present at an alarming rate across all platforms.
