Rio de Janeiro businessman Sergio Carvalho, one of the founders of the Ancar Ivanhoe company, died this Wednesday morning (10 years old), at the age of 83, in Rio de Janeiro, as a result of complications from Covid-19.
A business in the shopping center segment, Ancar Ivanhoe owns Shopping Eldorado, in São Paulo, and Riosul, in Rio de Janeiro, among other investments, of a portfolio of 24 projects in 13 Brazilian cities.
“Ancar Ivanhoe loses a great leader who served as an example and inspiration for his values, such as respect, humility, generosity and transparency,” the company said in a statement.
Carvalho, who is 83, leaves his wife, Lia, three children (Mariana, Marcos and Marcelo) and grandchildren. He started out in business in the Banco Andrade Arnaud family business.
In the 1970s, the family became a shareholder of Shopping Conjunto Nacional, in Brasilia. The project, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2021, was the second shopping center to open in Brazil.
In 1972, the brothers Sergio and Raul Luiz founded Ancar Empreendimentos Comerciais. The group has invested in various Brazilian cities, through Shopping Recife, Iguatemi Porto Alegre and Shopping Nova América, in Rio.
Carvalho left the management of the company in 2003, handing over the leadership to his sons, Marcos and Marcelo. In 2006, the company entered into a partnership with Canadian Ivanhoé Cambridge and became one of the largest shopping center companies in the country.
“Sergio has always championed that a shopping center has the power to transform the community it is a part of, so he propagated the idea that every shopping center is a platform for social development and that it should contribute to communities in which it was inserted, ”the company said.
