WHITEHORSE – Yukon Premier Sandy Silver said Canada, Canada’s leader in COVID-19 vaccination rates, has failed to protect the territory from a recent “inevitable” increase in cases, which prompted the return to stricter restrictions.
Silver says the Yukon was ready for the return of COVID-19, which is why the territory declared a state of emergency on Monday with measures to reduce transmission, including mask wear and collection limits in valid from November 13 to December 3.
Whitehorse is experiencing widespread and untraceable cases of COVID-19 and Dr. Catherine Elliott, acting chief medical officer of health, says there has also been an increase in infections among those who are fully vaccinated.
She attributes the higher infections in those who received two injections to the high amounts of COVID-19 circulating in the Yukon and the time since people received their second dose of the vaccine.
Elliott says it’s normal for immunity to the vaccine to wane over time, which is why the government is now offering booster shots to people 50 and older.
She says the territory is also closely monitoring other jurisdictions across Canada to determine when the time is right to offer a more extensive recall program.
