Ancar Ivanhoe is one of the largest companies in the shopping center sector, with 24 projects in its portfolio (including those in which it is a partner and others that it manages). Among them, Shopping Eldorado, in São Paulo; Iguatemi in Porto Alegre; and Riosul, in Rio.
“Ancar Ivanhoe loses a great leader who served as an example and inspiration for his values, such as respect, humility, generosity and transparency. The country is losing an entrepreneurial and innovation enthusiast, who defended the social role of the private sector in building a fairer Brazil. We reinforce our thanks for the inspiration during these 49 years with the company, ”company management said in a statement.
He leaves his wife Lia, three children (Marcos, Marcelo and Mariana) and grandchildren. Interment will be reserved for family and friends.
“Doctor Sergio”, as he was called in the middle, began his professional life in the family business – Banco Andrade Arnaud, one of the largest credit institutions in the country in the 1960s. In the 1970s he led the sale of the bank alongside his brother, Raul Luiz.
At the same time, he decided to enter the shopping center sector, which was still in its infancy at the time. In 1971, the Carvalho family became a shareholder of Conjunto Nacional, the second shopping center opened in the country, located on Avenida Paulista. The entry into the company took place at the invitation of businessman Donald Stewart, founder of Ecisa, a construction and property management company that years later gave birth to BRMalls.
In 1972, the brothers Sergio and Raul Luiz created Ancar Empreendimentos Comerciais. Over the years, the company has participated in projects that have become a benchmark in their regions, such as Shopping Recife, Shopping Iguatemi Porto Alegre and Shopping Nova América, in Rio.
In 2006, Ancar joined forces with Canadian Ivanhoé Cambridge, the real estate arm of Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec, manager of institutional funds in Canada. Despite its foreign partner, Ancar has never ceased to be a family business. The founder left current affairs in 2003, and his sons Marcos and Marcelo took over as co-chairman of the group, a model that continues to this day.
Dr Sergio was also one of the founders of the Brazilian Association of Shopping Centers (Abrasce) and the institution’s first president, a position he held three times. His knowledge of the sector led him to the council of notables of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), being the first Latin American in the collegiate church.
The businessman has also worked in philanthropy, with donations to Casa São Luiz and Rede Cruzada, to support the children, and helped build a community school in the community of Rocinha.
