Evgenia Medvedeva: Canada is a cool place, but I feel more comfortable in Russia
Double world and European champion, double Olympic medalist, Russian figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva recounted how she remembered two years spent in Canada.
Medvedeva went to Canada to coach Brian Orser after the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang. In September 2020, Evgenia returned to Khrustalny, but missed the season due to injury and illness.
“Two years is a bit long, but most of my time in Canada has been occupied by hard training and learning English. Despite the fact that I had already arrived there with some knowledge of the language, I had to take it seriously. It was necessary to blend in with familiar speech – oh, that was difficult, even psychologically.
I also saw there a different society, freer, more peaceful. Has become more tolerant of any manifestation of cultural and social diversity. But in general, you know, the Olympics gave me a lot, so I came to Canada already taught (smiles). Overall I can say that Canada is a great place. But the Russian people are still closer to me. It’s my mentality, and I realized I felt more comfortable in Russia.
Concretely, I don’t miss Toronto, because I really like Moscow. On the contrary, I miss the people – they are my coaches, choreographers, directors and the athletes themselves in our group. I miss our friends who we found there and with whom we still keep in touch. Of course, Brian and Tracy Wilson write to me all the time, we communicate, “- quotes the words of Medvedeva” Match TV “.
