Two elementary schools in PEI. will close on Monday due to COVID-19 cases

CORNWALL, PEI –

Two elementary schools will be closed in Prince Edward Island on Monday after two children tested positive for COVID-19.

PEI’s chief public health officer Dr. Heather Morrison confirmed four new cases in a statement released Sunday, involving two people in their 30s and two children under the age of 12, all from the same household.

Morrison says the cases are linked to travel out of the province and all four tested negative on Monday, November 1 before testing positive on Saturday.

Morrison says one of the children attends Westwood Elementary School and the other is a student at Eliot River Elementary School in Cornwall, Prince Edward Island. Both will therefore be closed on Monday as a precaution.

“A decision was made to close Westwood and Eliot River elementary schools for one day to allow time for public health to complete contact tracing, close contact testing and for the school to undergo a deep clean. “Morrison said in Tuesday’s update.

She says neither of the children are showing symptoms, but they both went to school on Wednesday when they may have been contagious.

Morrison says there are 55 close contacts identified and that contact tracers come into contact with students, teachers and staff in the children’s cohorts and on their school buses.

“This situation is very different from what we had with the school cases in Prince Edward Island in September,” Morrison said in Monday’s update. schools. “

Children who traveled on the No.81 bus to or from Westwood Elementary School on Wednesday November 3 are not considered close contact and should be tested on Monday and monitored for symptoms until next Wednesday.

There are currently seven active cases of COVID-19 on the island.
