China urges Canada to stop violating human rights

by Edie Jenkins

China and Canada participate in a debate during the session of the UN Human Rights Council.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, GENEVA – Canada and 40 other countries called on China to “immediately grant unfettered and meaningful access” to Xinjiang. Thus, independent observers can conduct surveys in the Western Province of Bamboo Curtain Country.

Meanwhile, the Chinese envoy called on the Canadian authorities to stop “committing human rights violations” in their own country. This mutual accusation took place during a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council that was held virtually. The debate shows friction between Western countries and China, which are beginning to review their respective countries’ record of human rights violations.

Chinese envoy Jiang Duan highlighted the Canadian government’s mistreatment of indigenous peoples and the recent discovery of the bodies of more than 200 indigenous children in a home. He called for a “full and impartial investigation” into cases of crimes against indigenous peoples and cases of racism and xenophobia in Canada.

“We urge Canada to immediately stop committing human rights violations,” Duan said on Tuesday (6/22).

He added that the UN Commission on Human Rights should “examine the problems of human rights in Canada”. “Canada has also repeatedly used human rights as an instrument to advance its political agenda,” added Duan.

Canada presented statements from 41 Western countries regarding allegations of human rights violations in Xinjiang. Where the US State Department accused China of detaining hundreds of thousands of Muslim minorities in professional camps. “We urge China to immediately provide unhindered and meaningful independent observer access to Xinjiang, including the United Nations High Commissioner,” said Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations Leslie Norton.
