Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday that the plane carrying Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor had left Chinese airspace and returned home. Meanwhile, China, Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou has soared.
Meng Wanzhou was arrested in December 2018 at Vancouver Airport while being transferred to another flight at the request of the United States. She was accused of violating US trade sanctions against Iran, which she allegedly tried to avoid by providing banks with false information. Then she was released on bail, allowing her to live in Vancouver until the final extradition decision. Maine was released on Friday under a deal with the U.S. prosecutor’s office. She admitted to covering up sanctions violations against Iran in exchange for withdrawing her extradition request, reports RIA Novosti.
Shortly after, Chinese authorities detained and then arrested two Canadians in Beijing. They have been accused of committing acts that threaten China’s national security.
By the way, Huawei has been subject to US sanctions since May 2019 for suspicion of espionage and communication with Chinese security services.
