A recall has been issued for certain clothing items sold at Giant Tiger stores containing high levels of lead, according to a notice released Tuesday by Health Canada.
The affected products include Real Love Girls brand two-piece shorts sets sold between May and October of this year under model number S37313/Giant Tiger (this number can be found on the garment’s fabric label) and SKU number 1444637. According to the recall, item sizes 2 to 4T are affected.
“The buttons on the shorts contain lead in excess of permissible limits, posing a risk of lead exposure to children,” the Health Canada press release said. “As of October 14, 2024, the company has not received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.”
Health Canada notes that exposure to Lead has been linked to a variety of negative health effects including convulsions, vomiting, diarrhea and anemia, as well as serious effects on the liver, kidneys, cardiovascular and immune systems.
Lead can cause pregnancy complications and brain damage and is particularly toxic to children. There is no safe level of lead exposuresay health officials.
The recall notice asks customers to immediately stop using the products and notes that a refund is available if returned to Giant Tiger stores. According to the company, 744 of the shorts sets were sold nationwide.
Consumers are reminded that selling or even giving away recalled products is prohibited and that those in possession of the products should do so Report health and safety incidents to the department using an online form.
