Trina Solar Co., Ltd., a Chinese rival of Canadian Solar, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware against three U.S. subsidiaries of Canadian Solar. The lawsuit alleges that these subsidiaries directly or indirectly infringe two U.S. patents held by Trina related to tunnel oxide passivation contact (TOPCon) technology for solar photovoltaic modules.

As one of the largest solar product manufacturers in the world, Canadian Solar produces and sells various solar products, including TOPCon solar modules, to customers in the United States and around the world. Canadian Solar has also filed and secured thousands of patents in multiple jurisdictions for solar cells and related technologies. “Canadian Solar respects and takes its own intellectual property rights and those of third parties very seriously. “In our view, this is a frivolous lawsuit and we expect the court will find that our proprietary TOPCon technology does not infringe Trina’s claimed patents,” noted Adam Walters, general counsel, Americas for the module and system solutions business Canadian Solar.
