St. Louis Blues goaltender Joel Hofer of Winnipeg, Manitoba, recorded his second career shutout in the National Hockey League on Thursday. He achieved this feat in a 1-0 Blues victory over the New York Islanders at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
Hofer made 34 saves in the shutout. He made seven saves in the first period, 14 saves in the second period, 10 saves in the third period and three saves in overtime.
Left winger Jake Neighbors of Calgary, Alberta, scored the only goal for the Blues. He scored 2:04 minutes into overtime ahead of Hofer and former Edmonton Oiler defenseman Philip Broberg. According to Matthew DeFranks of stltoday.comHofer made NHL history. He became the first goalkeeper ever to record a shutout and an assist on the game’s only goal.
This was Hofer’s third NHL assist in his career. He also assisted on Robert Thomas of Aurora, Ontario, in a 5-3 Blues victory over the San Jose Sharks in Hofer’s NHL debut on November 4, 2021, and Jordan Kyrou of Toronto, Ontario, in a 5-2 victory the Blues over the San Jose Sharks Chicago Blackhawks on April 10, 2024.
This was Hofer’s second NHL shutout. He previously made 27 saves in the Blues’ 3-0 win over the Calgary Flames on October 26, 2023.
In two games this season, Hofer has a record of two wins and zero losses. He has a save percentage of .937 and a goals-against average of 1.98. After five games, the Blues improved to a record of three wins and two defeats and thus to six points.
