Five things to watch for in Canadian business in the coming week

TORONTO – Five things to watch for in Canadian business in the coming week:

Port of Montreal

The union representing longshoremen at the Port of Montreal will strike at two terminals on Monday. The union is threatening a work stoppage starting at 7 a.m. Monday and lasting until Thursday morning.

Air Canada pilots

Air Canada pilots will begin voting on a tentative working agreement with the airline on Tuesday. Charlene Hudy, the head of the Air Canada pilots union, says she will resign if members decide not to agree to a tentative deal. The ratification vote ends on October 10th.

Tech conference

Canada’s tech community is gathering in Toronto for the Elevate conference Tuesday through Thursday. Speakers expected to appear at the event include Shopify Inc. President Harley Finkelstein, Lightspeed Commerce Inc. CEO Dax Dasilva, American tech journalist Kara Swisher and Women’s National Basketball President Teresa Resch Association.

Confidence motion

The Liberals will face another no-confidence vote on Tuesday as the Conservatives make another attempt to topple the minority government after an earlier attempt failed when the NDP and Bloc helped defeat the motion. The government will also vote on changes to the capital gains tax system on Wednesday.

Home sales

Some of Canada’s largest cities will release their September home sales numbers this week. Calgary is expected to report sales on Tuesday, followed by Vancouver on Wednesday. Numbers for the Toronto region are expected on Thursday.
