Five things to watch for in Canadian business in the coming week

by Rex Daniel

TORONTO – Five things to watch for in Canadian business in the coming week:

Macklem speech

Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem will address the Canada-UK Chamber of Commerce in London on Tuesday. The central bank cut its key interest rate for the third straight time earlier this month, and Macklem suggested further cuts were possible if inflation remained under control.

McKay speech

Dave McKay, chief executive of the Royal Bank of Canada, will speak at the luncheon on Tuesday at the Canadian Club Toronto. At a banking conference last week, McKay called the Canadian banking sector a “ruthless oligopoly” as he said RBC was more cautious in making mortgage offers that didn’t meet the minimum return.

Dollarama results

Discount retailer Dollarama Inc. will report its second-quarter financial results Wednesday morning before markets open. Dollarama increased its stake in Dollarcity to 60.1 percent earlier this year and announced plans to expand the brand into Mexico.

Economic data

Statistics Canada will release its national balance sheet and financial flow accounts for the second quarter on Thursday. The report will include household debt to income ratios. Meanwhile, July wholesale figures are expected to be released on Friday.

Transat AT results

Transat AT Inc., the parent company of Air Transat, will report its third-quarter results on Thursday morning. The travel company reported a second-quarter loss of $54.4 million, compared with a loss of $29.2 million a year earlier, as its revenue rose nearly 12 percent.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 8, 2024.
