The Canadian national team is in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Davis Cup. On Sunday, Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario, earned the decisive victory with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Daniel Evans of Great Britain. Before Sunday’s Davis Cup, Canada did not need to beat Great Britain. They only needed to win one of just three matches. Shapovalov won the first of the day, meaning the second singles and doubles matches later in the day in Manchester were exhibition matches, with Canada securing first place in Group D.
Shapovalov’s victory lasted one hour and 21 minutes. Shapovalov was the better server, having six aces while Evans had only two. Shapovalov also broke Evans four times out of five opportunities.
Shapovalov had a great week of tennis, winning all three of his matches. Shapovalov also beat Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-3 and Finland’s Otto Virtanen 6-2, 6-3 in Group D. However, since the Davis Cup is not included in the world rankings, Shapovalov’s world ranking actually dropped from 100th to 101st.
This was Shapovalov’s third win in five matches against Evans. Shapovalov also defeated Evans in the second round in Miami in 2019, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, and in the quarterfinals in Vienna in 2022, 6-3, 6-3. Canada will play in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in Spain in November, along with the United States, Argentina, the Netherlands, Italy, Australia, Spain and Germany.
