Katie Vincent wins Olympic gold in the women’s 200-meter race C1

Katie Vincent from Mississauga, Ontario won the gold medal in the women’s C1 200-metre race at the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris on Saturday. This was Vincent’s third medal in canoeing at the Olympic Games, after winning bronze in the women’s 500m C2 at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, alongside Laurence Vincent-Lapointe of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, and bronze in the women’s 500m C2 at the 2021 Paris Olympics, alongside Sloan Mackenzie of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In the Women’s C1 200m final, Vincent recorded a winning time of 44.12 seconds, which turned out to be a world record. Nevin Harrison of the USA won the silver medal with a time of 44.13 seconds and Yarisleidis Cirilo of Cuba won the bronze medal with a time of 44.36 seconds. Vincent reached the podium with a lead of 0.66 seconds over Anita Jacome of Spain, who finished fourth with a time of 44.78 seconds.

Vincent became the first Canadian and fourth Canadian woman to win a gold medal in canoeing at the Olympic Games, following Frank Amyot of Thornhill, Ontario, in the men’s C1 1000 metres at the 1936 Olympic Games in BerlinLarry Cain from Toronto, Ontario, in the men’s 500-metre race C1 at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angelesand Adam Van Koeverden from Toronto, Ontario, in the men’s K1 500 metres at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
