Bianca Andresscu from Mississauga, Ontario caused an impressive surprise in the first round of the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris. In her match at the famous Roland Garros, Andreescu, ranked 171 in the world, defeated Clara Tauson of Denmark, ranked 63 in the world, 6-2, 6-3.

Andreescu, the 2019 United States Open champion, got off to a great start, winning four of her first five matches. She will next play Donna Vekic of Croatia in the second round. Vekic is currently in a very good position, having made it to the semifinals at Wimbledon. This will be their first head-to-head clash.

Meanwhile, No. 16 seed Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec, needed three sets but defeated Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. This was one of the more exciting matches of the first round, as Fernandez and Muchova have both reached Grand Slam finals. Fernandez reached the final of the 2021 US Open, while Muchova reached the final of the 2023 French Open. Next up for Fernandez is Cristina Bucsa of Spain, in their first head-to-head encounter.

In the men’s singles, Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, the 13th seed, defeated Marcos Giron of the United States 6-1, 6-4. Like Andeescu, Auger-Aliassime got off to a great start, winning four of the first five matches. Auger-Aliassime will next play Maximilian Arterer of Germany. Auger-Aliassime won their only previous meeting 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 in the first round of the 2024 BMW Open in Munich last April.
