by Rex Daniel

The Governor General, representing Queen Elizabeth II, “has accepted my request to dissolve Parliament. Therefore, Canadians will go to the polls on September 20, ”Trudeau said from the federal capital, Ottawa.

According to him, his country is in a “historic moment” and that is why “it is extremely important that Canadians can choose how they will come out of this pandemic and how they will rebuild themselves for the better”.

“Now we will be making decisions not just for the months, but for the decades to come,” said Trudeau, 49.

“Make progressive”

“I ask you to support a progressive and ambitious government” which advocates “a strong health system, affordable housing and a safe environment,” he added, launching some of the main themes of his campaign.

At the head of a government in parliamentary minority since October 2019, which makes him dependent on the opposition parties to pass his reforms, Trudeau intends to take advantage of the favorable polls, his management of the pandemic and the success of the campaign. vaccination.

But the opposition parties, all opposed to the early elections, denounced a political calculation behind the Prime Minister’s decision, taken despite the continuing pandemic.

Like other countries, Canada recently announced that it is facing a fourth wave of COVID-19, due to the development of the delta variant, which is more contagious.

Yet the country has one of the best vaccine coverage in the world: 71% of 38 million Canadians have received a first dose and 62% are fully immunized.
