“Divisive content”: Songs by Canadian singer Shubh removed from THIS music app
New Delhi: Canadian Punjabi singer Shubhneet Singh, known by his stage name Shubh, has run into trouble for separatist posts. After his performances were cancelled, the now ShareChat-owned platform Moj, the short video sharing platform, has taken his songs offline.
In a statement, the platform said: “Moj is a brand deeply committed to fostering a vibrant community of creators. In line with our values, any artist who spreads divisive content has no home on our platform.”
“With this in mind, we have removed artist Shubh’s songs from our in-app music library. Our goal is to provide our community with joyful moments that reflect our world,” the statement continued.
This came after BookMyShow announced that the singer’s three-month tour in India was cancelled. A day before the singer’s tour was cancelled, electronics brand boAt had pulled out as a sponsor of the concert.
“While our commitment to the incredible music community runs deep, at boAt we are first and foremost a truly Indian brand. Therefore, when we learned of the comments made by artist Shubh earlier this year, we decided to withdraw our sponsorship of the tour,” the company said, citing the singer’s previous comments.
The trouble started when the singer shared a distorted map of India in his Instagram story a few months ago, with the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and the northeastern states conspicuously missing.
He wrote “Pray for Punjab” next to the picture, which immediately sparked criticism. Singh later deleted the card and replaced it with a message that simply said “Pray for Punjab,” without a picture.
