The Canadian national team is in the quarterfinals of the men’s rugby sevens qualifying tournament for the 2024 Olympic Games in Monaco. On Saturday, Canada secured a spot with a 33-14 victory over China. With the win, Canada improved its record to two wins and one loss.

The Canadians finished second in Group B. They lost their last group game 17:12 against Great Britain on Saturday.

Five Canadians scored tries in Canada’s victory over China. They were Ethan Hager of Brantford, Ontario, Thomas Isherwood of Okotoks, Alberta, Josiah Morra of Toronto, Ontario, Phil Berna of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Alex Russell of Montreal, Quebec. Cooper Coats of Halifax, Nova Scotia, meanwhile, scored four tries.

In Sunday’s knockout round, Canada will play its quarterfinal match against Chile on Sunday at 4:43 a.m. MT. The other quarterfinal matches are South Africa vs. Uganda, Great Britain vs. Tonga and Spain vs. Hong Kong. Only the champion of the 11-team tournament will qualify for the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris.

Eleven teams have already qualified for next month’s Olympics. They are France, New Zealand, Argentina, Fiji, Australia, Uruguay, Ireland, the United States, Kenya, Samoa and Japan. The United States qualified by winning a North American sevens rugby tournament in Langford, British Columbia, last August.
