The United States, Britain and Canada imposed new sanctions on Tehran on Thursday in response to the Iranian attack on Israel. The measures mainly target the trade and production of drones.
The US government announced that 16 companies, eight individuals, several ships and a plane had been sanctioned, accused of helping Iran procure unmanned aerial vehicles. London said four companies and two individuals had been sanctioned over their involvement in drone production. Additionally, the export of components that can be used to build drones has been further restricted.
“Britain and its partners have sent a clear message today: we will hold those responsible for Iran’s destabilizing behavior to account,” British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said, according to the statement. Iran’s ability to develop and export these deadly weapons will be further limited, the conservative politician continued.
Iran attacked Israel in mid-April with hundreds of drones, rockets and cruise missiles. However, they were almost entirely intercepted with the support of the allied states. The attack followed a suspected Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy complex in Damascus that killed two generals of the influential Revolutionary Guards earlier this month.
