Jakarta (ANTARA) – Canada advanced to the final after defeating world champions United States (US) 1-0 in the women’s football semi-final match at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 at Ibaraki Kashima Stadium on Monday, the official Olympics.com website noted.

Jessie Fleming became Canada’s hero with a 74th minute penalty after Deanne Rose was knocked down by Tierna Davidson in the box.

Despite the game’s victory, Canada lost possession of the ball to the United States throughout the game. They only had 44% possession and created just four chances.

Meanwhile, the United States could register 13 chances with five leading to goal.

This victory is an increase in achievements for Canada compared to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. In the previous edition, they had won only a bronze medal.

It was also the second consecutive failure for the United States to reach the final at the Women’s Olympics.

Now Canada must wait for their potential opponent, namely the winner between Australia and Sweden who is due to play Monday at 6:00 p.m. WIB.
