Canadians don’t have to worry about throwing away their cinnamon for now, officials say.
South of the border, US citizens are being asked to throw away certain brands Cinnamon after elevated lead levels were found in several products.
The FDA warned that lead exposure does not produce any obvious immediate symptoms. Long-term exposure to lead can have serious consequences Health problemsespecially in children.
Cinnamon from six retailers was recalled with lead levels between 2.03 and 3.4 parts per million (ppm). However, a previous recall found levels of up to 5,110 ppm in cinnamon flavor applesauce and applesauce.
As an example of context: maximum permissible ppm for lead in infant formula is 0.01. Fish protein and whole tomatoes can contain up to 0.5 ppm.
At least so far, lead levels have only been found in cinnamon sold in the United States
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed in an email to CTV News on Wednesday that the products known to contain lead were not distributed in Canada.
“The CFIA is aware of the US FDA warning and is in contact with US authorities,” the CFIA said.
The CFIA said it was monitoring the situation.
The CFIA said the public will be informed through Health Canada website when a recall is published.
