Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Sydney Pickrem of Halifax, Nova Scotia, won the bronze medal in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar, on Friday. For Pickrem, who won the bronze medal in the women’s 4×100 medley relay at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021, it was her sixth career medal in World Swimming Championships history.
Pickrem took third place with a time of 2:22.94. Tes Schouten of the Netherlands won the gold medal with a time of 2:19.81. Kate Douglass of the USA won the silver medal with a time of 2:20.91. Pickrem secured a medal by 1.5 seconds ahead of Alina Zmushka of the Neutral Independent Athletes, who had a time of 2:24.44.
This was Pickrem’s second medal at the World Aquatics Championships. She previously won silver in the women’s 200-meter individual medley. Before Doha, Pickrem had won four bronze medals at the World Swimming Championships. They were in the women’s 400-meter individual medley at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, as well as the 200-meter individual medley, the women’s 4×100-meter medley relay and the women’s 200-meter backstroke at the World Aquatics Championships 2019 in Gwangju.
Canada has now won 10 medals at the 2024 World Aquatic Swimming Championships in Doha, Qatar. They have won two gold medals, three silver medals and five bronze medals. Pickrem’s bronze medal on Friday will give her confidence as she prepares 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
