Canada’s Chief of Defense Staff, General Wayne Eyre, is retiring

by Ainsley Ingram

The Prime Minister’s Office said Gen. Wayne Eyre plans to retire as chief of Canada’s defense staff this summer.

He took on the acting role in February 2021 as the armed forces were dealing with sexual misconduct scandals involving several senior members.

In November of that year, he was officially appointed Canada’s defense chief.

During his 40-year career, Eyre was deployed to Cyprus, Croatia, Bosnia and Afghanistan and led several domestic missions.

As defense chief, he was tasked with leading efforts to change the force’s culture after an independent review found it toxic and rife with sexual misconduct.

The Prime Minister’s Office says a selection process will begin to find his successor and that Eyre will stay for an interim period once someone is chosen.
