Canada beats Mexico in women’s water polo at the Pan Am Games

Team Canada defeated Mexico 32-7 on Wednesday in women’s water polo at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. With the win, Canada improved its record of three wins and zero losses and won Group A.

Serena Browne of Montreal, Quebec led Canada with five goals. In total, 11 Canadians scored a goal. Elyse Lemay-Lavoie of Montreal, Quebec, Emma Wright of Lindsay, Ontario, and Verica Bakoc of Toronto, Ontario each scored three four goals, Blaire McDowell of Regina, Saskatchewan, Kindred Paul of Spruce Grove, Alberta, and Hayley McKelvey of Delta , British Columbia scored three goals each, Montreal’s Floranne Carroll and Axelle Crevier scored two goals each and Montreal’s Daphne Guevremont and Calgary, Alberta’s Francis Lekness each scored one goal.

Canada will face Chile in the quarterfinals on Thursday. In fact, all eight teams in the tournament qualified for the quarterfinals, as group play could have been viewed as more of a seeding round. In other action, Argentina plays Puerto Rico, Mexico plays the United States and Cuba plays Brazil. The United States is the clear favorite to win the tournament, having won the gold medal in the last three Olympics. The winner of the Pan American Games in women’s water polo qualifies for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
