Stanford Cardinal wide receiver Elic Ayomanor of Medicine Hat, Alberta, won the 2023 Jon Cornish Trophy on Wednesday Canadian Press. The award is given to the best Canadian soccer player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Ayomanor did not play the 2022 American college football season due to a knee injury. Even though he didn’t play, he still lost his freshman status.
In 2023, Ayomanor was a sophomore and had a very productive season in the final year of the PAC-12 as we know it. Through 12 games, Ayomanor was the Cardinals’ top wide receiver. He had 62 catches for 1,013 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
Ayomanor’s most amazing performance came on October 13 in the Cardinals’ 46-43 win over the top-ranked University of Colorado Buffaloes. The Buffaloes gained notoriety this year because they were coached by multi-sport legend Deion Sanders. Ayomanor had 13 catches for 294 yards and three touchdowns. The 294 receiving yards were the most by a Cardinal receiver in franchise history. Aymanor’s touchdowns were 97, 60 and 30 yards. What was equally impressive about the Stanford win is that they overcame a 29-0 deficit.
Also in 2023, Aymanor had two more 100-yard receiving games. He had 146 receiving yards in a 42-33 loss to Washington on October 28th and 122 receiving yards in a 62-17 loss to Oregon State on November 11th.
