ECONOMYNEXT –Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee Chairman Pramodya Wickramasinghe has hinted at the existence of a conspiracy behind Sri Lanka’s unspectacular performance at the Cricket World Cup.
The beleaguered cricket team, along with officials, returned to the island on Friday morning, November 10, and spoke to reporters at Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport amid tight security.
Responding to questions from reporters, Wickramasinghe said he would “reveal everything” in two days.
The chief selector expressed his disappointment over the team’s poor performance in India and said that while he took responsibility for it, there was a “reason for the dip in performance”.
“I won’t say anything today. Give me two days. I will reveal everything,” he said.
“We didn’t do our best. Give me two days and I will reveal the reason and also the location of the collapse,” Wickramasinghe said.
The official said Sri Lanka traveled to India with a plan which will be reflected in the team’s future style of play.
“I take responsibility. I won’t run away. “I will disclose in the future whether there was a conspiracy,” he said.
“There was a conspiracy by a certain group. I will talk about it,” he added.
Wickramasinghe said he needed time to study the developments that had taken place in Colombo regarding cricket administration during her absence.
Sri Lanka’s parliament passed a resolution on Thursday to remove top officials from the island nation’s cricket board over the 2023 World Cup debacle, a day after a local court ordered the officials suspended for at least two weeks.
In an unusual move, the resolution passed unanimously in a closely divided 225-member legislature. The move comes amid protests near the Sri Lanka Cricket Board headquarters in the capital Colombo demanding the removal of top cricket officials.
