TORONTO – Canadian auto workers at Stellantis facilities in Canada have gone on strike after failing to reach an agreement by Sunday’s deadline, according to Unifor.
A union statement said more than 8,200 workers have resigned across all Stellantis facilities.
Lana Payne, president of Unifor National, says the union has made progress and will continue negotiations throughout the night.
Unifor said it is trying to get Stellantis to agree to the same core economic terms the union negotiated with Ford Motor Co. and General Motors, as well as issues specific to the global automaker behind brands like Fiat and Jeep.
Union members at the other two companies have already ratified agreements that, among numerous other improvements, will give workers nearly 20 percent pay increases over three years.
Stellantis has seen escalating strikes by United Auto Workers members at its U.S. operations over the past six weeks, but on Saturday the company reached a tentative agreement with the union.
A statement from Stellantis said it was “extremely disappointed” by Unifor’s strike action and would continue to negotiate until an agreement was reached.
