It was a frustrating day for Saltus Grammar School on the first day of the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools Senior Boys Tournament on Thursday at Ridley College in Ontario.
Bermuda’s high school champions suffered a 2-0 loss to St. George’s Vancouver in their tournament opener, but bounced back with a 1-1 draw against St. John’s Ravencourt.
Saltus was left to mourn missed opportunities against No. 2 seed St. George’s Vancouver, who capitalized with a late double salvo to secure the points.
“It was a close game and they scored two late goals to win,” Saltus coach John Barry Nusum said The Royal Gazette.
“In the first half we didn’t take advantage of a few chances, so they stayed in the game. In the second half the game became more of a physical battle that they were able to win.”
Nusum’s protégés also missed their chances in their next game against St. John’s Ravencourt. They took the lead before their opponents fought back and secured a share of the spoils.
Ahri Daniels broke the deadlock early in the first half to give Saltus the lead before their Canadian rivals equalized early in the second half.
“Our team played much better, but didn’t take advantage of the chances to win,” added Nusum.
Saltus is competing in the tournament for the first time in three years and has arrived with a squad of 17 players aged between 14 and 17. Nusum is supported by trainers Timmy Figureido and Lynn Emery.
