Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Punjab President Sunil Jakhar on Saturday wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on the diplomatic standoff between India and Canada. He said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had made “absurd and malicious accusations” to suit his domestic political constraints.
“Following the Canadian Prime Minister’s baseless allegations against the Indian government, diplomatic relations between the two countries are understandably in a downward spiral. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has only made these absurd and malicious allegations to suit his domestic political constraints.” “The Indian government has taken the right stand by vigorously opposing Prime Minister Trudeau’s outburst and demanding evidence, which apparently is not forthcoming available,” the letter says.
Jakhar said that due to the current situation, a large section of Punjabis is likely to be affected by the impasse. “As you know, most of our Canada-based NRIs are abroad visiting their relatives in India as winter begins and are really worried about the evolving situation,” he said.
The BJP leader asked Jaishankar to make a detailed statement detailing various steps and measures taken by the Indian government for the welfare of its citizens in Canada.
“I am sure that this would go a long way in alleviating the feeling of deep fear, panic and indecision that prevails among our people living in Canada. An assurance from your office would certainly allay the doubts and uncertainty of our students.” “I am rightly concerned about their study plans,” he said.
He also asked the EAM to set up a dedicated helpline number where NRIs and students can contact Indian consulates and seek assistance. He also suggested releasing a WhatsApp number for Indian students who are planning to go abroad for their studies.
