A plane breakdown delays Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau’s departure from India

Trudeau, who was attending the G20 summit in New Delhi, was scheduled to leave India on Sunday evening local time.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s departure from India was delayed after “technical problems” occurred on the planes he and the rest of the Canadian delegation were using, his office said Sunday.

Trudeau, who was attending the G20 summit in New Delhi, was scheduled to leave India on Sunday evening local time.

“As we departed for the airport, we were alerted by the Canadian Armed Forces that CFC001 was experiencing technical problems,” said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, referring to the aircraft. “These problems cannot be solved overnight. Our delegation will remain in India until alternative arrangements are made.”

The statement did not elaborate on the nature of the problems with the aircraft.

Earlier, Trudeau met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. According to a separate statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the two discussed inclusive economic growth, support for low- and middle-income countries and access to concessional financing for sustainable development.

Canada said this month it had paused talks on a proposed trade deal with India, just three months after the two nations said they wanted to reach an initial deal this year.
