VIDEO: Western News joins the SkyHawks parachute team high above Penticton

by Edwin Robertson

“The free fall was the best part. “It was about 40 seconds long,” said Penticton Western News’ Tracey Anderson, who got to do a tandem skydive with the Canadian Forces SkyHawks skydiving team before her big jump at Peach Fest on Wednesday.

Anderson was one of the lucky few media people to take the Skyhawks on the skydiving adventure of a lifetime 12,000 feet above Penticton.

“It’s one of the best experiences of my life,” Anderson said. The tandem team floated to the ground and landed in the fields of Penticton Airport. The video will be released on Thursday morning.

Adrenaline-pumping action is no stranger to Anderson.

She recently became a racer at Penticton Speedway and you can watch her burn rubber or drift past her competitors. A Women’s Day event will be held at the speedway on August 20.

The SkyHawks practiced jumps in Penticton ahead of the big day, as they put on a show in the skies over Okanagan Lake Park with colored smoke and put on a show from 6,000 feet with their signature parachutes flying the Canadian flag. The show begins on Wednesday, August 9 at around 6:20 p.m.

After the performance, the demonstration team organizes activities in the park and answers questions from the public.

“It’s been great here so far,” said Tyler Owen, a Skyhawks demonstrator from Alberta. “A nice community vibe, everyone has a smile on their face and there’s a nice uplifting vibe.”

“It’s great representing the Skyhawks,” said Owen. “It’s definitely an honor to be part of what we do.”

The SkyHawks are also the proud winners of the annual Peach Fest Wednesday trash races.
