by Naomi Parham

Harjit Sajjan, Minister for International Development in charge of the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, is expected to arrive in Tanzania today as he begins his five-day visit to the east African member state.

During his stay in Tanzania, Mr. Sajjan will visit Canadian government-sponsored projects focused on health, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR), inclusive economic growth and food security.

He will be accompanied by Canadian MP Arielle Kayabaga.

The duo will also meet with Tanzanian officials to discuss the realities in the region and Canada’s continued commitment to Tanzania.

Tanzania is his last stop after visits to the United Kingdom (UK) and Rwanda.

Tanzania is one of the largest recipients of Canada’s international aid (US$127 million in 2021–22).

Canada has provided US$3.54 billion in development aid to Tanzania since independence.

The Commonwealth member state is one of the largest bilateral donors to Tanzania in the health sector and provides significant support in strengthening the health system and the SRHR.
