“We were thrilled to be selected to host such a prestigious event here in Midland,” said the host of the upcoming Canadian Masters Weightlifting Championship
Some of the country’s strongest athletes will be in Midland for an Olympic weightlifting competition at the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Center next weekend.
Over 160 athletes, with families and coaches, will travel to the Canadian Masters Weightlifting Championships on July 15-16, 2023, which will see ages 30 to 85 compete in two types of dynamic overhead exercises: the snatch and clean and jerk.
“We were thrilled to be chosen to host such a prestigious event here in Midland,” said Joanne Jeffrey of event host Driven. “Usually the event is reserved for big cities.”
Previous events have been in Moncton in 2022, Winnipeg in 2020 and St. Thomas, Ontario in 2019.
“For some athletes this will be the final event of their competitive season and for the elite it will be a stepping stone to the World Championships in Poland later this year,” said Jeffrey. “Last year Driven sent three athletes to Orlando for the World Championships and they placed second, fourth and fifth in their divisions. Midland is definitely on the map when it comes to Masters Weightlifting.”
This year’s event is expected to feature 14 local athletes who train at the Midland venue.
The event is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on July 14 and end at 4:00 p.m. on July 16 at the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Center at 527 Len Self Blvd. last for. Spectators are welcome.
