WASHINGTON, July 10 (Reuters) – US forces in eastern Syria came under indirect fire on Saturday, but initial reports did not indicate casualties or damage, a US defense official told Reuters.

The official said, on condition that he wishes to remain anonymous, that the attack took place in Conoco, Syria.
On Wednesday alone, US diplomats and troops in Iraq and Syria were the target of three missile and drone strikes, including at least 14 missiles that hit an Iraqi airbase where US forces were stationed, wounding two American soldiers.
Although there were no direct responsibilities for the attacks, analysts assumed they were part of a campaign by Iran-backed militias.
Iraqi militia groups allied with Iran announced retaliatory measures after four of their members were killed in US attacks on the Iraq-Syria border last month.
Iran has denied supporting attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria and has condemned US airstrikes on Iran-backed groups.
The United States has held indirect talks with Iran to bring both nations back into compliance with the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which was abandoned by the Trump administration. No date has been set for a next round of talks, which were adjourned on June 20.
