A year after Quebec-based Entosystem secured more than $60 million in public and private investment for its new insect production facility, it has inaugurated its 100,000-square-foot site, which now has the largest manufacturing capacity in North America.
The automated industrial system is expected to enable Entosystem to recycle 90,000 tons of organic matter and produce 5,000 tons of high-quality, protein-rich larvae and 15,000 tons of approved fertilizer for organic farming every year. And all through a zero-waste process.
The organic materials reclaimed from farms to grocery stores are used to feed the black soldier fly larvae hatched at Entosystem’s facilities. The facility receives 250 tons of feed per day, which the insects consume in just six days. Once these larvae are well fed, they are dried and ground into protein that is used as feed for pets and livestock.
This new development will create approximately 70 jobs in Drummondville with the opportunity to grow to a team of 100 employees.
“Insects can quickly reuse large amounts of organic matter. By industrializing the process, Entosystem can convert food waste into essential inputs for agriculture: natural fertilizers and alternative proteins for animal feed. Shifting to a circular economy is a promising model that will help us meet our climate goals,” said Marie-Claude-Bibeau, Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Food.
