Health Canada has issued a recall notice for Simply Hot brand Thai green peppers after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) found possible Salmonella contamination.

The recalled products were sold in Alberta and Saskatchewan and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories, Health Canada said in a statement note released on Wednesday.

The affected product is the 50 gram size with UPC number 8 94242 00050 4. The specific lot associated with the recall is the lot packaged on 20AL23, according to Health Canada.

No illnesses have been reported related to consumption of the recalled product, according to Health Canada.

Health Canada is urging consumers to avoid purchasing affected products because they can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly for young children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

Because food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, the health department warns it can still make you sick.

According to Health Canada, healthy people who consume food contaminated with Salmonella may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications can include severe arthritis.

Health Canada is urging Canadians to check their refrigerators to ensure they do not have the recalled products. Once found, you may not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute them. Instead, throw them away or return them to where you bought them.

If you accidentally consumed the recalled product and became ill, Health Canada says you should contact your doctor.
