Staffers recommend Vernon City Council to approve funding for park improvements in Canada’s Lakeview Estates – Vernon News

Staffers are recommending that the City of Vernon spend an additional $160,000 on Deer Park at Canadian Lakeview Estates.

A report to be presented to City Council at its regular meeting on Tuesday said the upgrades are consistent with the Parks Master Plan and the amenities of comparable parks in the city.

The staff recommends that the Council approve a $160,681 increase in the 2019 project budget for Deer Park, 9192 Tronson Rd. to allow for site improvements including a plaza and playground equipment.

According to the report, the initially unveiled scope of work in 2019 included the rebuilding of two tennis courts, the removal of stumps and scrub from the field, the improvement of the road network and the installation of play equipment.

The project budget approved by the Council in 2019 was $361,000. The remaining project budget is $340,443.

Deer Park is designated as a neighborhood park with a surrounding neighborhood of about 900 residents.

The park currently has two tennis/pickleball courts, but lacks a playground structure, benches, and picnic tables that fit the definition of a neighborhood park.

Sports facilities, such as multiple racquetball courts, are typically associated with sports and community parks that are more expensive to build and maintain and are generally located in central areas of the community to serve as many people as possible.

While several neighborhood parks in the city of Vernon have tennis courts, such as Sawicki Park (two courts) and Whistler Park (two courts), these parks typically serve larger surrounding neighborhoods of about 2,200 and 2,100 residents, respectively.

A public consultation was held in 2020 and the vast majority of people supported the concept plan, which envisaged the renewal of the existing facilities and the addition of playground equipment.
