The Women’s Pro Basketball League is hosting its first game in Canada on May 13th

Each week, CBC Kids News delves deep into a topic that made headlines. Click on the video above or below to view this week’s KN Statements.

For the first time, the Women’s National Basketball Association is hosting a game in Canada.

The preseason game will be held on May 13 in Toronto, Ontario between the women’s teams Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx.

While Toronto has the Raptors in the NBA, there are no Canadian teams in the WNBA.

So why Canada and why now?

Kids News spoke to Leah MacNab, executive director of NBA Canada.

“It just felt like the next natural progression [basketball] fans can learn about women’s football,” said MacNab.

She hopes to continue to grow the WNBA and NBA in Canada.

Online fans of the WNBA share their hope that Canada could have its own WNBA team.

“When you have a team representing a country you will see how loyal, honored and proud the fan base will be to support and support you 1,000 percent,” Instagram user @kay_mlp23 wrote in a WNBA post Toronto game.

“That’s why the WNBA needs a team in Toronto or in Canada.”

But could a city in Canada support a WNBA team? And what are the WNBA’s actual expansion plans?

KN contributor Abigail Dove examines what it takes for a city to get a professional sports team franchise and which cities are suitable.
