WINNIPEG, MAN. — Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV acquired Natural Bakery Ltd in the first quarter of this year. in Winnipeg.
The transaction was announced by Daniel Servitje, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, on April 27 during Bimbo’s first-quarter earnings conference call.
“This company is a one-bakery operation specializing in the manufacture and sale of rye bread and bolsters our health and wellness portfolio,” he said.
Natural Bakery was founded in 1957 by members of the Mikalauskas family who immigrated to Canada from Lithuania.
“Their recipes represented rye breads from different regions of Europe, but they also wanted a unique rye bread that was inspired by Canadian life and reflected the ethnic diversity of Winnipeg,” says Natural Bakery. “Together they developed the original Canadian rye bread, which is still very popular throughout western Canada today.”
In addition to Canadian rye, the company’s products include Bavarian rye, Baltic rye, Hanoverian rye, Old World rye and pumpernickel, as well as products such as 6-grain bread, crusty white bread, French bread and Paska bread. The company’s products are sold throughout much of western Canada.
Originally located at the corner of Logan Street and Sherman Street in Winnipeg, the company built a new bakery nearby in 2007.
