BC team wins fire department curling championship

by Horace Rogers

It was a gold medal performance for the British Columbia team at the Canadian National Firefighting Curling Championship.

The championship tournament was held in Charlottetown, PEI from March 24th to April 1st and featured 10 teams from across the country.

Summerland Fire Chief and BC Team member Rob Robinson said the tournament featured the best curlers from each province.

“It was a good competition all week,” he said.

The British Columbia team consisted of Dean Thulin, Ken Dawson, Kevin Maxwell and Robinson, and Rick Euper, the team’s director.

Thulin and Dawson are from Campbell River, while Maxwell is from CFB Esquimalt, the Canadian Forces base on the Pacific coast.

Robinson has been curling for over 40 years and is also an active curler at Summerland Curling Club.

During the round-robin portion, the team finished with a 7-2 record, losing to Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario.

The team faced Alberta in the semifinals and Southern Ontario in the finals to win the gold.

While British Columbia’s team members are drawn from across the province, Robinson said they play well together.

“We get along really well as a team,” he said. “We are all like brothers.”

This isn’t the first time Robinson has been part of the gold medal team at the championships, as the team also took gold at Regina in 2010. The curlers have also achieved good placements in previous tournaments.
