The Toronto Maple Leafs signed goaltender Samuel Richard for an amateur test game on Thursday.
Richard, who played with U-Sports champion University of New Brunswick Reds this season, will serve as a backup for starting goaltender Joseph Woll against the New York Rangers on Thursday.
Usual starter Ilya Samsonov is out for the regular-season finals, while goaltender Matt Murray is out with a concussion.
It’s the fourth straight game the Maple Leafs have drafted a goaltender for an amateur tryout as a substitute. In the first game, they played University of Toronto goaltender Jett Alexander in the final minute of a 7–1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.
Richard had an 18-4 record with U Sports this season with a .933 save percentage and a 1.59 goals against goals conceded average. The 22-year-old from Ste-Catherine, Que., played his last three seasons with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
The Maple Leafs begin their first-round playoff series against the Tampa Bay Lightning next week.
