Afghan students get help from Prince Charles
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TORONTO – About 200 students and dancers have fled Afghanistan with the help of Prince Charles Charity in Toronto, Canada. The girls and their families will be settling in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan in the coming weeks.
“We will use all options to help Afghan refugees find safety in our country. We provide protection for oppressed women and minorities. This is Canada’s humanitarian response to the crisis in Afghanistan, ”said Canadian Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino.
Refugees fleeing the interim government Taliban Afghanistan decides girls can’t go back to high school. They tried to exit through Kabul airport but it was too dangerous. Eventually, they spent several weeks getting to safety by land and made their way to Pakistan.
Reported by Middle East Monitor, Tuesday (9/21), in 2010, Prince Charles of England founded Prince’s Charities Canada whose Toronto branch was instrumental in planning the escape. The group expressed gratitude after learning that the Afghan refugees had left unharmed.
“They are a very inspiring community and now have the opportunity to grow and continue their education in Canada,” said Prince’s Charities Canada President Mark Fell.
In about three weeks, the girls and their families will travel to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where they will stay after going through Covid-19 quarantine.
Saskatoon has a population of approximately 274,000 people. According to Taylor and Francis, a UK-based company that publishes academic journals and books, the 2016 Canadian census shows that approximately 76,000 Afghans live in Canada.
