The US Migration Agreement with Canada | DiePresse.com

President Biden and Prime Minister Trudeau want to shut down alternative routes for illegal migration. Canada encourages legal immigration.

Vienna/Ottawa. Roxham Road, an inconspicuous five-mile gravel road through a wooded area parallel to Interstate 87 between New York and Montreal, has been a migration hotspot for years. The United States and Canada share a border of nearly 9,000 kilometers. But here, between New York and Quebec, around 40,000 refugees, mostly from South and Central America, tried their luck last year – crossing illegally into Canada, lured by a liberal asylum policy.

In January alone, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police recorded 5,000 migrants despite freezing temperatures down to minus 20 degrees. They had often endured a month-long odyssey from the south to the north of the United States. Compared to statistics on the US-Mexico border, where 2.3 million migrants were stranded last year, this is insignificant. Faced with the assault on the Rio Grande, US President Joe Biden has meanwhile returned to the rigorous policy of Donald Trump.
