China releases two Canadians suspected of spying after Huawei boss frees

by Ainsley Ingram

TRIBUNNEWS.COM – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the release of two of its citizens after three years of detention in China.

The release of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig came after Huawei boss Meng Wanzhou was released from detention in Canada.

BBC report, the two Canadians were arrested in 2018 for espionage.

They were arrested shortly after Canadian police arrested Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou on a US warrant.

The detentions sparked years of diplomatic tension.

Meng reportedly left Canada on Friday (9/24/2021), while Trudeau said both Spavor and Kovrig will arrive in Canada on Saturday (9/25/2021).

Critics have accused China of detaining Canadians in retaliation for Meng’s arrest.

They will be used as a tool for political negotiation. But Beijing vehemently denies it.

Trudeau said the two Canadians had gone through an unusually difficult ordeal. During their detention, the two Canadians declared themselves innocent.

“It is good news for all of us that they are returning home with their families,” Trudeau said.
